The city which is also referred to as the “City on the Plain” is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The area comprises of serene landscape and is considered to be the most important location for the tea production in the country.

Due to the high altitude, a far cooler climate is on offer with its annual temperature being 16 degrees Celsius. Indian Tamils are the main inhabitants of the area with a percentage of 50.6 of the total population.

The town’s main attractions are the Golf Club, the Hakgala Botanical Gardens and the Seetha Kovil which is a Hindu temple.

   
 
         

The city of Kandy is situated in the midst of hills in the Kandy Valley. It is one of the most picturesque cities in the country and functions as an administrative and religious city while also being the capital of the Central Province.

Presently the city is considered sacred as it houses the temple of the tooth relic or the Dalada Maligawa which is visited by many devotees from all over the world.

 
 
         

The Horton Plains National Park is a protected area located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered in thick forest and mountain ranges. It also serves as the headwaters of three main rivers which are the Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawe rivers.

Visitors to the park can witness large herds of Sambar Deer grazing on the grasslands while Bakers Falls and World’s End are among the many popular tourist attractions on view.

The park can be accessed via the Nuwara Eliya – Ambewela – Pattipola and Haputale – Boralande roads.

   
 
 
 
         

The mountain range is found in Central Sri Lanka, Northeast of Kandy. It gets its name from a wide range of mountains that resemble a clenched fist.

Visitors to the area can witness these mountains amidst heavy fog and mist which is part and parcel of the area. A characteristic of the range is that at higher elevations there lies a series of isolated cloud forests, where a variety of flora and fauna can be found. The mountains are also home to some of the country’s biodiversity.

 
 
 
   
         

It is a small town in the West of the country while also being in the wet zone rain forest. Large groups of people are found enjoying the beautiful scenery that the place has to offer while having a bath at the Kelani river.

A main feature of the area is the heavy vegetation that is sometimes found to swallow up its surroundings. Rubber trees are grown in areas of a higher elevation while tropical fruits such as the yellow and red bananas are also found.

Meanwhile various species of birds are found to dwell in and around Kitulgala with Sri Lanka’s most recently discovered bird, the Serendib Scops Owl also an occupant.

   
 
   
         

The reserve is a national park and the centre of biodiversity in the country. UNESCO declared the area as a World Heritage site.

The name of the reserve translates into the Kingdom of the Lion. The forest was saved from being the centre point of illegal logging and was later designed as a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 while later being named as a World Heritage Site in the year 1988.

Numerous forms of wildlife have made the Sinharaja Forest Reserve their home with elephants, leopards and a few species of reptiles, namely vipers being its chief occupants.
